Assisted by his grungy servant and the moronic Lord Percy, Edmund plots his rise to greatness. But actually going to France would be insanely dangerous, so Blackadder finds an alternative a little closer to home. The Prince is understandably worried about his popularity after an anarchist throws a bomb at him. He agrees to recite a brilliant speech by Blackadder and decides that he wants his two favourite actors, Mr David Keanrick and Mr Enoch Mossop, to coach him. But things soon change when Baldrick thinks he overhears the actors plotting against the Prince.

As ever, the Prince is terminally short of cash, so he is persuaded to marry the fantastically wealthy heiress, Miss Amy Hardwood. Having wooed her heart for the Prince with a lot of drippy poetry, Blackadder is disgusted to learn that the Hardwoods have been lying about their fortunes from industry, and in fact have been living off lard butties for five years.

The Duke of Wellington challenges the Prince to a duel after the latter made sexual advances to the Duke's nieces. Blackadder agrees to fight the Duke in the Prince's place, in exchange for the Prince's entire fortune, an amusing clock and a stack of French erotica.

When a plan for his mad Scottish cousin to take his place falls through, Blackadder must face the duel himself. General Melchett is on the lookout for a talented artist who can do an especially stirring painting for the cover of King and Country magazine. When George produces a picture of genius, Blackadder passes it off as his own, believing that Melchett will send the successful artist to Paris and away from the trenches.

Reluctant to march to his certain death, Blackadder has taken to ignoring orders. He even shoots a carrier pigeon when it arrives with orders to advance, and eats the evidence. Unluckily, this particular pigeon is the property of General Melchett. Blackadder is court-martialled and sentenced to death by firing squad. There's a ticket out of the trenches and into the West End of London for Blackadder if he can successfully organise a concert party to raise morale back home. Somehow, Blackadder manages to overcome his loathing of music hall and stages an unforgettable show, could this be his chance to escape the front line?

Inspired by the cushy life that Lord Flashheart seems to enjoy, the boys join the Royal Flying Corps. Unfortunately, it turns out that their nickname - the Twenty Minuters - derives from the amount of time they can expect to live, rather than the amount of work they have to do in a day. The filthy genes of the Blackadder dynasty bubble back to the surface of the melting pot of history as Lord Edmund, arrogant peer-about-town, swaggers back with a big head and a small beard in search of favour from stark raving mad Queen Bess.

Edmund Blackadder falls in love with his man-servant, who turns out to be the girl 'Bob'. Edmund is appointed to the unenviable post of Lord High Executioner.
